The Lake House is a romantic drama, starred by Keanu Reeves as Alex Wyler and Sandra Bullock as Kate Forster.

Kate was a doctor. She moved out of a house on the lake side, a house made of mostly see through glasses. She left a mail in the mailbox to the new tenant. One day, 14 Feb 2006, when she was sitting in front of a place, Daley Plaza, she saw a man hit by a bus. The man died though Kate tried hard to help him. Struck by the accident, Kate returned to the Lake House. She found reply for her letter. The new tenant was Alex. Alex was an architect. The Lake House he was staying in then, was actually built by his father. Through a series of back and forth letters they put in that magical mailbox, they discovered that, they were actually 2 years apart in time. Meaning, they wrote to each other from their time, one was the future (year 2006), the other one was the past (2004).

The story went on about how they told each other their lives and thoughts. Alex tried hard to meet the "past" Kate. He even booked a table at "Il Mare", a restaurant so hard to get a table at, for a day 2 years after that day he went there. On 2006, Kate went there, but Alex never showed up. Disappointed, Kate told him to just end it there, despite of all the chemistry and feelings they had, she thought it’d be too difficult to make it. She went on with her life, until 2008. When she walked in into an architect office, she saw a sketch of the Lake House, which had been made by Alex. Then she found out that the guy who was hit by the bus in front of her, the one she was trying to help, was actually Alex. She rushed to the Lake House, wrote a letter begging Alex not to go to that place, or else he would be dead by the accident. Which was why Alex never showed up to Il Mare. She told Alex to wait another 2 years, until 2008, and come to the Lake House, where she was waiting while crying down the mailbox.

Did Alex eventually show up at the Lake House?

Yes, this is a spoiler, but the film’s already on DVD, so I have no guilts to spill it out to you.

Alex did come to the Lake House. Meaning, that day, 14 Feb 2006, he did read Kate’s letter and didn’t come to Daley Plaza. The story ends there. They were happy to find each other eventually.

Although I like the story, and I know it’s an adaptation of a Korean film titled "Il Mare", I couldn’t help but wonder of few things :

1. Why didn’t Kate realize that Alex who wrote those letters, was the same Alex that kissed her and owned the Lake House back in 2004, whom she met at her own birthday party at that time?

2. How come it was possible for Alex to show up at the end of the movie, assuming that he read the letter and cancel to go to Daley Plaza and therefore wasn’t killed in the accident, because if that happened, then Kate wouldn’t go to the Lake House, and they wouldn’t write to each other at all, right?

It’s a bit weird, and complicated, the play of time twisting here, of events twisted here and there. It needs thorough to understand completely what happened and how. But I’m not in the mood to think it through so much. Let’s just say that I enjoyed the film very much, it touched me deeply, and that’s it.

It’s quite an unusual type of film, especially from regular romantic drama. And it’s a reunion between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, after their 1st one, "Speed", 12 years ago (1994). Both looked more mature. And Keanu still looked stunning, as usual.

Of course, that’s why he’s my all time most favourite actor.
