Just Ask - Learning from “Evan Almighty”

"Ask, and it shall be given you…"

Monday night, 24 Dec 2007, I spent my night time watching DVDs. A perfect night, wouldn’t you say? What’s lack there was the fireplace, a dog lying at my feet, and perhaps a boyfriend to hug. And a TV Set. *sigh*
I really need to put aside a couple of hours and GO BUY THAT DAMN TV SET.
Anyway…
I started with "Lust,Caution", which, I don’t know, kinda boring? Except for the "exciting" part of the sex scenes, I just skipped other scenes quickly, and perhaps just watched intensely only for the beginning 20 mins (oh, and of course, the SEX SCENES), and then decided that I should switch to other movies, before I fell asleep and snore. So I put in "Evan Almighty", the only Non-Drama among DVDs I bought that day.
It was a comedy. A quite unusual comedy, would’ve been unique if there wasn’t a "Bruce Almighty" few years ago. The guy played Evan, I forgot his name, mimicked some of Jim Carrey’s style, but other than that, I think he’s good. And yesterday I realized that guy looked a lot like Michael, the crazy boss from "The Office". Is he?
Wait…Googling…
YEP! He IS Michael the Crazy Boss. And also the 40 year Old Virgin. Google’s just AMAZING, don’t you think?
So, this Evan Almighty movie. What moves me? Oh, you know, the fact that they used Morgan Freeman as "GOD". I’m not being racial here, but I have to admit it is quite a different thought, and bold, to use Morgan Freeman (gosh, I can’t even bear myself to write "black actor" here…ups…there you go…), to be "GOD". Because, to some people, it might be : Hey, since when God is BLACK???
And I would say, if someone ever asked me that : Did you meet God already? Is he NOT BLACK? How come you’re still standing here, because if you’ve met God already, then you should be somewhere else, because you must have done something BIG, that HE would bother to meet a prick like you!
OK, enough…
So, what also touches me in the movie, was when Morgan Freeman told Evan’s wife (the lines might not be precise, but you’ll get the point) :
When you ask for courage, God does not give you courage. HE gives you OPPORTUNITY to be courageous. When you ask for patience, HE gives you OPPORTUNITY to act patient, HE gives you events that will test your patience. When you ask for family to be closer, you are given a series of events that if you succeed and act right, your family WILL BE CLOSER.
Deep, huh?
When I heard those lines, I thought, well, it is TRUE. No wonder when you pray for something, you feel like desperate, why is it GOD doesn’t give me what I WANT? And instead, HE’s giving me all these sh*ts??
Well now you, and I, know the reason, don’t we?
It’s just sometimes, we ARE afraid to ask. Afraid of what might happen, afraid that what happen might not be what we want, or the way we want it. But again, another scene in the movie shows that what we want, or what we plan, aren’t necessarily what HE WANTS FOR US. It was when Evan said that building the ark was not part of his plan, and GOD simply laughed out loud. I was thinking, well, I could be as idiot as Evan too, planning and insisting while I was talking to GOD HIMSELF, that what HE WANTS ME TO DO, well, they AREN’T MY PLANS. And, an idiot I would be, right? Arguing with GOD?
Anyway, it was also clear that GOD gives us what we want, as long as what we want is the right thing which is what HE wants for us as well. Like what Evan asked, to change the world. And what his wife asked, to have their family closer.
So, perhaps, even if the Christmas has passed, I’m still entitled to ask GOD for certain things. Like, maybe, can I grow taller, maybe 4 or 6 inches more? No? YOU SURE? Well…at least I tried to ask…
Or perhaps, be slimmer? Yes? That means I have to stop munching at chocolates and cakes and candies and ice creams and…arrrgghhhh…GOD, THAT’S HARD!!
OK…
So, perhaps I’d ask for something more simple.
Like, can I have a happy life? No conflicts, no fightings, no quarrels? So we can all live in peace and harmony? Hm, I bet after this there might be appearing a series of events where I will be likely tested on my patience…Well, it’s starting already apparently.
After all, HE gives us what we NEED, not what we WANT, doesn’t HE?
Hope you all had a great Christmas hours and (planning on) a great New Year’s eve also!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, people!
I knew it! i knew that evan was on another tv series, but i can’t recall from what series he was. Thanks to you for googling him, and BINGO! he is the crazy bos from “the office”.
Anyway, about the quote, i never pay attention seriously while watching that dvd, but once again, thanks to you, i just realize that nothing as more as right than Morgan Freeman’s line in this movie.
For me, “Tuhan tidak akan memberikan cobaan-cobaan kepada umatnya, kecuali jika mereka mampu menghadapi cobaan tsb”, which i beleive it is true
yup, He will not allow us to be tested more than we are capable to handle, so when we think we’ve reached our limits and this time HE’s given way too much to bear, perhaps it’s actually we haven’t stretched our capability THAT far, and it’s just another opportunity to try out our endurance and loyalty and faith!
thanks for visiting my blog!
